Short Term Plasticity and Cognitive Memory
- It's not entirely clear how forms of psychological memory
emerge from neural changes.
- Some work in working memory involves loops of neurons with
neurons going through quiescent stages.
- Once activated, short term potentiation allows the most
recently used memories to be reactivated.
- Thus, working memory is maintained by STP.
- I've used Short Term Depression to get Cell Assemblies to
stop firing; that is it takes the item out of psychological short
term memory. I don't have any evidence for this.
- I've thought about using short term potentiation to support
growth (adding new neurons) in Cell Assemblies.
- It does seem likely that short term potentation supports long
term potentiation. However, that's just a theoretical idea.
