Chris and Cell Assemblies

• I got my PhD in natural language parsing.
• It's clear that you need semantics to understand language (and resolve parsing ambiguities).
• I knew about this CA stuff (from Steve Kaplan).
• So, I thought I'd just use it as my basis for semantics to resolve PP attachment ambiguity.
• 15 years later I had a paper.
• The problem is that we don't really know how CAs work.
• It is however clear that we ground our symbols in our knowledge of the environment.
• If we could understand how to do that, we'd be making great progress.
• I have however found a simple way to have CAs. I call them binary cell assemblies.
