Axons
- Axons are generally quite short, but can be perhaps a meter long.
- As the brain isn't really a meter across, it's possible for any
cortical neuron to connect to any other neuron.
- Neurons do tend to connect locally.
- Different types of neurons have different numbers of pre and post
synaptic neurons.
- You can say that they usually have 1000 to 10000. However,
some have 100,000 synapses, and some have 5.
- Long distance axons can be myelinated to make electrical
transmission more efficient.
- Long axons are broken up by ranvier nodes to compensate for
electrical loss.
