Axons

• Axons are generally quite short, but can be perhaps a meter long.
• As the brain isn't really a meter across, it's possible for any cortical neuron to connect to any other neuron.
• Neurons do tend to connect locally.
• Different types of neurons have different numbers of pre and post synaptic neurons.
• You can say that they usually have 1000 to 10000. However, some have 100,000 synapses, and some have 5.
• Long distance axons can be myelinated to make electrical transmission more efficient.
• Long axons are broken up by ranvier nodes to compensate for electrical loss.
