Types of Biological Neurons
- While each neuron is unique, there are many types of
neurons (counts vary, but around 40).
- The models we've talked to so far are regular
spiking neurons.
- Some of these groups have different firing behaviour under
constant input.
- They roughly correspond to regularly spiking neurons. Aside
from adaptation, with a constant input, it will spike at a
constant rate.
- The most common neuron in the cortex is the pyramidal neuron
and it is regularly spiking.
- Bursting neurons don't fire but then fire a burst of spikes
under constant input, then become regular.
- Chattering neurons fire in bursts.
