Big Data

• We've spoken about big data before.
• The idea is there is more and more data about.
• It can be (and is) used to gain economic advantage.
• This fits in with machine learning, but also fits in with smart use of databases.
• Market basket approaches are simple examples.
• This big data stuff can go from relatively small amounts of data (like others who bought this bought) to huge amounts of data.
• For example, google has got speech recognition software that uses the standard Hidden Markov Model.
• However, they have Terrabytes of data to build the model. Some is tagged, most isn't.
