Research in Distributed Gaming
- This is an active area of research. Here is a paper I
found and read quickly.
- Meeting Technology Challenges of Pervasive Augmented Reality Games by
Broll, Ohlenburg, Lindt, Herbst and Braun (2006) 5th ACM SIGCOMM
- The point of this is to give you a link into active research.
- First of all this is talking about pervasive games.
Instead of using a desktop, you use goggles and are actually
embedded in the game.
- The problem here is often to locate you and your surroundings and
put those into a game. It helps if you're in a cave.
- Advanced input devices are now readily available (Wii).
- The game engines make extensive use of existing 3D game engines.
- There are problems with localization, putting the real environment
into the game.
- There are also big problems with multiple users.
- This paper is a couple of years old, and they're playing real
games like this.
