Early Online Gaming (MUDs)
- When I was in University (in the 80s), we played a Multi User Dungeon
game (Maze?).
- It ran on the mainframe, and we accessed the mainframre via
dumb terminals.
- The picture you saw was done in ASCII characters.
- I remeber you could have a dog that helped you. The big
dog was a D and the little dog a d.
- The interaction was good, you moved and it moved without
delay.
- All of the agents behaviour was canned, and most of the
animals were just chaotic hungry.
- Still, the interaction with people could be interesting.
You could talk via text.
- People were distributed around town, but we didn't play
people on the other side of the country.
- The ArpaNet wasn't that widely used, though we could
email globally.
