Agreement

One thing that makes a theory strong is that a lot of people believe in it.
It doesn't make it true (e.g. flat earth).
However, if smart people agree, that seems a pretty reasonable place to start.
Your Mother was pretty much always right.
How do you know the people are smart? Peer review and citation make pretty good proxies.
