CAs and Words
- A CA can learn to categorise an input pattern as an instance of
a particular word.
- Categorisation is the primary function of a CA and both modelling
and neuro-physiological evidence exists.
- CA formation:
- Instances of the patterns are presented repeatedly.
- Neurons activate causing connection strengths to change.
- Eventually, enough connection strength exists so that activation
continues beyond the direct stimulation.
- This is CA formation.
- With words the patterns are written words, spoken words and
instances of the concept. (A child may have the concept before
the label/word.)
- When a word is presented, the CA is ignited and persists for
several seconds.
