Neurotransmitters

• My understanding of neurotransmitters is far from complete.
• However, my reading of the literature is that the community's understanding of neurotransmitters, though lots better than mine, is far from complete.
• What does seem to be the case is that some neurotransmitters are used as gate signals for ions.
• The entry I have for this into the lit is "The Coupling of Neurotransmitter Receptros to Ion Channels in the Brain" by R. Nicoll 1988.
• For example, Nicoll states that Acetlycholine strongly excites virtually all pyramidal cells, but the action is quite complex and involves the blockace of at least 4 distinct potassium currents.
• Learning (synaptic weight change) almost certainly involves neurotransmitters in complex ways.
