Signal Processing
- A lot of the cortex and other parts of the brain are for
signal processing.
- That is, it processes the signals from the senses.
- We (scientists) understand this stuff relatively well, because animals
do pretty much the same thing we do.
- We can stick electrodes in animals (e.g. cats, rats and monkeys)
and see what the neurons do when particularly stimuli is presented.
- We can also take out that bit of the brain, and do in vitro experiments.
- We can even grow human brain tissue.
- For example, we know that the hair cells in our ears (neurons) respond
to tone specific waves. So you have neurons for middle C, and different
neurons for high C.
- I made a model that recognised vowells from this kind of input.
(That's not very sophisticated.)
