Machine Translation

• Another major success is machine translation.
• Given a document in (e.g.) French, translate it to (e.g.) English.
• Have you ever used Google translator? It comes up with a pretty good translation.
• For really important documents, you still need an expert translator. Naguib Mahfouz, UN.
• Still preprocessed translation makes for better human translations, and faster translations.
• These systems can work language to language, or through some intermediate form.
• Typically language to language works best.
• Do note that this is a problem for (e.g.) Swedish to Ojibwa.
• The more resources the better.
• This also require Natural Language Generation, a field of its own.
