A range of applications

• There are a wide range of applications that can sensibly be called NLP.
• The big games application is agent dialogue.
• Spell checking and grammar checking are two reasonable applications.
• Speech recognition could be classified this way but typically works from a Hidden Markov Model (using signal processing techniques).
• We'll talk about information retrieval, text extraction and machine translation later.
• Dialogic interfaces are also widely used beyond games.
