Machine Translation

• Another big area for NLP is machine translation.
• Automatically translate a document in one language to another.
• This doesn't work perfectly, but you can generally get an understanding of the translated document.
• Also, this is used by professional translators.
• Good systems speed the translation process by a factor of 5.
• I've also done some work that this process can be useful in cross linguistic information retrieval.
