Linguistics and Computational Linguistics
- Who here is a linguist?
- Linguistics is a relatively old field. My grand-supervisor, Roger
Schank, got his PhD in Linguistics.
- There has been ongoing and considerable advancement in Linguistics.
- Read Ray Jackendoff's Foundation of Language: Brain, Meaning, Grammar,
Evolution for an accessible interesting read.
- Ray points out that there are several systems (e.g. lexicon, syntax, and
semantics) that interact.
- What computational linguists have done is throw out the complex
stuff.
- They've skipped the ambiguity, and gone for the percentages.
- They've kludged the process with cascaded finite state automata
that can be learned.
- The learning can be semi-automatic or automatic.
- This enables fast processing, but also
- fast turn around so development can go fast.
