Cell Assemblies
- Hebb developed the Cell Assembly (CA) hypothesis in 1949.
- The neural basis of concepts is a group of neurons.
- These neurons have high mutual synaptic strength.
- They can remain active (via reverberation) after the stimuli
ceases.
- Neurons can be in more than one concept.
- The synaptic strength that supports the CA is formed via
Hebbian learning; (synaptic strength tends to increase
when neurons co-fire).
- So a CA is a long-term memory (formed via Hebbian learning) and
a short-term memory (maintained via neural firing).
- This hypothesis now has a lot of evidence to support it.
(Gravity > CA > 5+-2).
- (Kaplan told me about this.)
- It's one of my basic assumptions.
