Human Brain Project
- This work is funded by the Human Brain Project.
- I went to the annual meeting earlier this month, which involved
several hundred participants.
- We're in the neuromorphic subproject, but there are projects
in neural theory, neuro-robotics, mouse brain, systems and cognitive
neuroscience, and others.
- It's a 10 year project, and we've just started the third year. It's
flexible, so people can still join.
- One idea is to build a complete simulation of a human brain at the
neural level.
- The more accurate aim is to build infrastructure to support
neuroscience research.
- In particular, we (HBP) write code in pyNN (Python Neural Net), to
specify a neural topology. We then run simulations. In particular,
we're
interested in closed-loop (virtual and robotic agent) experiments.
- There are several common neural models to use. You can specify your
own. We (MDX and the SpiNNaker folks) are currently focusing on
Leaky Integrate and Fire models.
- Other groups are focused on compartmental models. They can then use
a slowed virtual environment and super computers to simulate
full brains (big parts now).
