Use the Theory
- A lot of theories you deal with, you just use.
- They seem reasonable to you, they're not entirely important, and
they've got some support.
- So, you incorporate them into your thinking.
- You use them to bolster your argument, and your own hypothesis.
- Understanding the theory is important, but you just take advantage
of others' work.
- If it supports your hypothesis, the evidence for it supports you.
- You might be able to reuse some of the techniques for your
own purposes.
- If you're using the theory, you can cite it.
- Similarly, you can cite evidence.
- Another important task is to dig out an old theory that has
been forgotten, was never popular, or fell out of favour
(Mendel's work was lost for 20 years).
