Cell Assemblies (or CAs for short)
- The idea derives from Hebb's work.
- A CA is a network of neurons which forms a reverberating circuit.
- An existant CA can be activated by external factors (either from the
environment or elsewhere in the net/brain).
- After the external stimulus is gone, the CA can remain active via
reverbating activity from within the CA. (Short-Term Memory)
Patterns are learned via Hebbian and Anti-Hebbian learning rules.
Certain patterns activate certain CAs, thus CAs are internal
representations of categories. (Long-Term Memory)
CAs can be learned directly from environmental stimulation.
Thus they have the potential to solve the symbol grounding problem.
