The Classical Model
- The classical model states that variable binding is done
by having two CAs active.
- Since both Red and Square are co-active they are bound together.
- Obviously, this doesn't take care of the Red-Square and Blue-Circle
problem.
- Some attempts have been made to argue that the window of attention
can solve this problem.
- All 4 concepts are co-active, but attention rapidly switches from
Red-Square to Blue-Circle and keeps them bound.
- This seems like a weak solution and at least there is not much
in the way of neuro-physiological evidence for it.
- Another solution is that there are binding sites. Groups of
neurons that are used to bind things together.
- This relates to a solution based on what and where paths.
The where path binds all of the properties together.
- We'll use this binding site idea as part of our eventual
classically based solution.
