Semantic Memory
- This prior work shows that CAs can work as semantic memory.
- It takes a long time to learn the concept, and repeated
presentation of instances of the concept. (Long-term Memory)
- However, once learned inputs can be categorised
and can remain active. (Short-term or Working Memory)
- That categorisation is done by CA ignition; the CA that is
ignited is the one that represents the category of the object
presented.
- There is some work in structuring this semantic memory.
- We've done some work with hierarchical categorisation, but there has
been other work in sequences, cognitive maps etc.
- Ambiguous stimuli can be resolved.
- Figure/ground problems can be resolved.
- This work is incomplete, but CAs form the only
coherent neural basis to semantic memory.
- There are lots of questions about having multiple concepts
simultaneously active, but one can imagine solutions.
