Cell Assemblies
- The neural basis of concepts is a subset of neurons that
has high connectivity.
- It can persist after stimulus (which is really important
for language as stimulus is transient).
- There's a lot of evidence for this (e.g. my draft review paper, Harris,
Pulvermuller).
- An active CA is a short term memory, and is active as long as
lots of its neurons are firing.
- A CA is formed by (Hebbian) learning and is thus an LTM.
- CAs give we researchers an intermediate level structure between neurons
and the whole brain.
- We don't know everything about them, but we know lots.
